Data Science Research and Initiatives at Colorado Universities
Some of the growth in data science in Colorado is fueled by the state’s university system, including the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder and its OffIce of Data Analytics (ODA), specializing in data analysis, data collection and visualization. Here are some of the ways Colorado schools are investing in data science:
- Supported by its Research Computing resources, CU Boulder’s Department of Computer Science has a variety of initiatives. In 2015, the university also created the Earth Lab. Meanwhile, over at the Computational Bioscience Program, graduate students are applying unusual computational approaches to significant biomedical questions.
- CU Denver has a dedicated Big Data Management and Mining Lab (BDLab), with projects funded by industry and government, and an active Mobile and Networked Systems (MNS) Laboratory. To encourage start-ups, the Business School has also built the Center for Information Technology Innovation and the Jake Jabs Center for Entrepreneurship, which serves as a networking hub for new businesses.
- The department of computer science at the University of Denver (DU) is particularly interested in information security and privacy and humane gaming. DU regularly hosts statewide Analytics Challenge at the Daniels College of Business.
- The department of computer science at Colorado State University (CSU) has several active research projects in areas that include big data, AI and bioinformatics. One of its big data specialists, Sangmi Pallickara, was the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Colorado State also houses the Data Science Research Institute, which develops theories and tools to address challenges with complex data sets.
Online Data Science Programs in Colorado
General information about online master’s in data science is covered elsewhere. The following information examines what makes programs in Colorado unique.
Online Graduate Certificates in Data Science
Online graduate certificates in data science in Colorado may help you to prioritize career goals. Depending on your level of knowledge, you might be interested in:
- Groundwork: Graduate Certificate in Data Analysis from CSU-Fort Collins.
- More advanced skills: Graduate Certificate in Data Science from Regis University.

Online Master’s Degrees in Data Science
When it comes to online master’s in data science degrees, Colorado’s offerings can be divided into two categories: nonprofits and for profits. The nonprofit category includes schools like CSU Fort Collins and CU Denver:
- CSU Fort Collins is the flagship university of the CSU system, and its online Master of Applied Statistics (MAS) echoes the campus experience. Students are taught by the same faculty.
- CU Denver’s online MS in Information Systems-Business Intelligence has the same requirements as the campus program, with the same faculty.
The for-profit category includes Aspen University and Colorado Technical University (CTU), which offers a doctoral program.
Data Science Bootcamps in Colorado
Live in Colorado and want to pursue a career in data science or data analytics? You may want to consider attending a data science bootcamp in Denver or other state locations. Bootcamps are short-term, intensive programs dedicated to quickly help equip participants with the basics necessary to work in the field.
Some bootcamps in Colorado focus on data science, which is the study of how knowledge can be extracted from various forms of information. Other bootcamps concentrate on data analysis, a more practical approach to drawing conclusions from information. Other types of bootcamps may combine the study of both data science and data analytics.
